The Democratic Process

Today I went to the offices of the Australian Consul General here in New York and voted in the NSW state election. it was a seriously grim choice but i managed to make some choices, if for no other reason than to support democracy.
Am enrolled in the seat of Coogee, in the Upper House I voted for the Human Rights party and in the Lower for the Greens.

Rampant Narcissism

The Weather

Today it is snowing and rather cold and generally rather miserable. This is at a contrast to last week when it was positively spring-like. The weather is weird they're sayin. It don't seem too strange to me having grown up in Melbourne Australia, the city that epitomises the term 'four seasons in one day'. New York has perhaps been four seasons in one week.
Anyway, here's hoping we've had the last of the arctic blasts for the season

Biscuits

Today, in a professional capacity, I made some heart shaped almond biscuits. All the while, Eva Cassidy was playing on the stereo.

Evening Lanscape With Aqueduct

From The Met's permanent collection, Evening landscape with Aquaduct(1818) by Gericault ( 1791-1824) (Gericault is perhaps best known for The Raft of the Medusa )
The younger man, with his open palm, beckons the older man to join. The older man hears the younger mans case , but chooses not to( symbolized by not putting his bag or staff down) The older man, towards the end of his life, is traveling, seeking or searching for something other than what the younger man has found.

From the Romantic period (1815-1848)

What's in a Name ?

What to call the blog? The blog is but 6 months old and the name has changed a few times already. Not sure I'm entirely happy with the current name, but it will do for now.

A Trip to The MoMA

Went over to The MoMA this afternoon, there is a great photographic exhibition (transparencies mounted in light boxes), by Canadian Jeff Wall. Definitely needs another few visits. then.........

Saw a movie Where is the Friend's House? (part of a series of films) by Iranian director Abaas Kiarostami. Thought it a really beautiful movie (on many levels) and hope to catch more in the series. and..........

And wandered into the bookshop, where I really shouldn't have gone and bought a book by English social commentator and graffitist Banksy.

Glitter and Doom

Glitter and Doom, German Portraits From The 20s(1919-1933), recently exhibited at The Met was a collection of paintings in the New Objectivity style by artists collectively known as The Verists. The Verists found inspiration in the political and moral landscape of a defeated and destitute nation filled with prostitutes, drug addicts, corrupt officials and tycoons, a floundering middle and upper class, mutilated ex-servicemen(the Verists bar one were all ex-servicemen) and a displaced population.

Hitler came to power in 1933, art became state controlled and many works were destroyed and the Verists themselves went into exile. The Verists included Max Beckman, George Grosz, Otto Dix.

Verist, from the latin Versus(true) - a rigid representation of truth, therefore the ugly and the vulgar must be included.

Was a very popular exhibition, managed to go several times.

Happy Mardi Gras 2007

Happy Mardi Gras to anyone going to the 2007 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

Here is a picture from what looks like the first protest march that Mardi Gras grew from and a picture from Taylor Square in more recent years. And the third is from one of the dance halls at the after parade party.(The current poster is elusive to this net searcher).
It would be awesome to be there.
