A Win!

By defeating the Dragons the Sydney Roosters put their first win on the board since August 12 2006. It was the club's thousandth win. Here's hoping it is the start of their march into the top eight.

Defeated

Five losses from five matches and the Sydney Roosters are on the bottom of the ladder. Next match they are up against St George Illawarra on Anzac Day, here's hoping they get the points on the board.

Inclement Weather

Was bailed up inside on Sunday due to a serious storm battering the east coast of America. Lucky for me Da Kath and Kim Code was on the television. (I was quite beside myself cause I hadn't seen it) It definitely was noice, different, unusual. I laughed and cringed right to the end.

And here they are performing at The Logies.

The Wind That Shakes The Barley

The Wind That Shakes The Barley, (2006) directed by Ken Loach, stars Cillian Murphy, was the winner of the 2006 Palme d'Or, has finally been released in New York. Is set during the Irish War of Independence and The Irish Civil War which followed. Usual themes of war are explored, (Ken Loach style) occupation, terrorism, brutality, loyalty(to country or to kin).
Was the most excellent movie, Cillian Murphy is a master of his craft and Ken Loach at 70 is at his best.
Title is a line from a 19c song of the same name.
Was a little strange for a Ken Loach film not to have a social worker in it.

Fassbinder

MoMA is currently screening a Fassbinder retrospective, went and saw Lili Marleen(1980), Lili Marleen being a song that became the unofficial anthem of the German soldier during world war II. Was very watchable, thoroughly enjoyable, I don't know if I'm knowledgeable enough to make any comment on Herr Fassbinder, other than to say it was a great movie, but if I manage to see any more in the series I could offer something other than these pedestrian thoughts.

On The Beach

On The Beach,(1959)Based on a novel by Neville Shute, director Stanley Kramer, was on t.v. last night. Starred Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Anthony Perkins and Fred Astaire.
Set in Melbourne Australia, ran with the premise that nuclear fallout had rendered the northern hemisphere uninhabitable, leaving an American submarine (captained Gregory Peck) stranded in Melbourne. Melbourne shows off her Victorian buildings, Port Phillip Bay look totally lush, H.M.A.S. Melbourne features, Waltzing Matilda rings out (a little too often), and the blue suburban trains( I remember them still running in the mid 80s) seem the picture of modernity.
Ava Gardner, Anthony Perkins and Fred Astaire all play Australians, Anthony Perkins a young husband and father, the model of hetrosexuality, (ha!) was perhaps the best with the accents, Fred Astaire wore many hats,(and a terrible hairpiece) one being a racing car driver competing in the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island, and Ava Gardner played her usual flirtatious (American) self, though there is a great scene where she drives a horse and buggy down the main street of Frankston.
On The beach addresses some concerns of the day, the arms race, the notion that having weapons that can destroy the planet will bring about peace and how people react when confronted with nuclear apocalypse.
AND it was reported that Ava Gardner said if you want to make a film about the end of the world Melbourne was the place to do it. Harsh words indeed!

The remnants of my life in Sydney have finally arrived in New York. I figure I'm going to be in New York for the longer term so it wasn't worth continuing to pay storage on a whole lot of furniture back in Sydney. (was in Australia last Christmas)I packed up six cartons worth of personal stuff and donated the rest to a woman's refuge. I lived in Sydney for 10 years and it felt good to put something back.
So now it's New York onward and up...........
