From the late 1800s up until 1970, the Australian government had a policy of forcibly removing Aboriginal children(in numbers over 100 000) from their families and placing them in orphanages, institutions or foster care of white families, expecting over time that Australia's indigenous race would be bred out.

The Previous Howard government had steadfastly refused to issue a formal apology. The Parliament of Australia under the leadership of new prime minister Kevin Rudd has just done so.
